In 1976, Abuja was designated the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria. And from the late 1970s to 1991, when the federal government officially moved to Abuja, a new city was built from scratch. Today, Abuja is a megacity with million dollar homes, tall office complexes and wide highways. Meanwhile the original inhabitants of Abuja, especially the Gbagyi people have been and continue to be displaced. This project tells the story of these indigenous communities through photographs captured by people who are from or live in these communities.
As you enjoy these photographs, we hope you will realize that Abuja is not a no man's land, but rather a city where the original inhabitants are now living on the edges.
